Use these strategies before and during the IELTS for better success.
Before the Test
Improve your typing.
The essay is written on a computer, so you will need to be able to type. Considering time is a factor, you want to be able to type quickly and accurately. Practice typing before the test, so you are fast and accurate.
Build up your stamina.
The IELTS is a 4 hour test, so you need to be prepared. The essay is at the end of the test, so you can’t be tired or worn out when you begin to write. When studying for the entire IELTS, make sure you take several complete practice exams. This will prepare you for the long time it takes to write.
Practice as authentically as possible.
You should write as many sample essays as possible. Make sure when you do this, you use the authentic conditions as the test. Only allow yourself the 40 minutes, use a computer, and don’t use and resources or people for help. By writing the essay exactly as it is on the test, you will be more prepared.
Practice your grammar and vocabulary.
2 of the 4 categories on the scoring rubric are on vocabulary and grammar. Make sure you practice these before the test. If you are unsure of any grammar or vocabulary topics, learn them well before you write the test.
During The Test
Write at least 250 words.
You will receive penalties if you do not write enough words. However, do not worry too much or waste time counting words.
Use a proper essay format.
An essay has a specific format:
- Leave a blank line between paragraphs.
- Indent a new paragraph.
- Do not use bulleted or numbered lists, charts, or pictures
- Always use full sentences.
Write your essay in a logical order that is easy to follow.
Organize your points in an order that makes the most sense. Your paragraphs and sentences should be easy to follow and understand.
Stay focused.
Stick with one opinion and do not change sides. You are supporting an opinion, so do not discuss opposite arguments or problems with your ideas. Stay focused on the topic. Everything you write should have a purpose and should support your thesis.
Use specific examples.
Examples are a very important part of your essay. They make your ideas stronger and clearer. They also show you can organize a paragraph. Make sure your examples are specific and related to your idea.
