The TOEIC exam tests your ability to use transitions.  This
is especially important in the incomplete sentences section and
the incomplete texts section.

The TOEIC exam uses three main groups of transitions:

  • AND
  • BUT
  • CAUSE & EFFECT

AND

This group of transitional words is used to add an idea.  They
are similar to the word and, but more formal.  The main
words used on the exam include:

  • Moreover
  • In addition
  • As well

Here are some examples:

I like pizza.
In addition, I like pepperoni.
I would like to visit France.
Moreover, I would like to visit
Italy.

BUT

This group of transitional words is used to show an opposite
idea.
The words most commonly found on the TOEIC exam include:

  • However
  • Yet

Here are some examples:

I don't like Italian food.  Yet, I like lasagna.
I have never been to South America.  However, I have been
to Central America.

CAUSE & EFFECT

These transitional words answer the question of why.  The
introduce a second sentence which is the result of the first
sentence.
The common transitional words on the TOEIC are:

  • Therefore
  • Thus

Here are some examples:

I lost my wallet.  Therefore, I could not pay for dinner.
She is 13 years old.  Thus, she can't drive a car.
